I have had the same problem (greyed out selection, recognized in profiler but not desktop) and I have tried the command M and Disk Aid fixes on mine. (I've asked about it here). None of that has worked (at least not permanently).
The thing with mine is that the drive sometimes mounts and sometimes doesn't. I don't know why. It is my old, original 8G drive. When I updated my G3MT and got a new drive I asked them to leave the old one in as a second "slave" drive. It doesn't have anything on it anymore. Because the backup of my old files resulted in folders and folders of unreadable stuff I would think the damaged directory interpretation may be the right one. I was told on this list that the reason I probably couldn't access my old files (even though I can see them and they display as having size) was because of copy errors made when the tech people were backing up my old drive. It's probably reasonable to guess that if they botched that they lost some direct connect for the driver info. I still haven't gotten a chance to go through and either a)fix the problem or b) just reinstall everything. I 'm a student and the semester is in full swing. 10.2.3 seems to be working great I just can't do anything with my old documents presently (except for a lengthy workaround with MacLink) and my old drive is useless in there as it now stands.
