Hello, I've got a Beige G3 minitower that has what I believe to be a "Yikes!" 400 mhz zif in it. Machine performs beautifully as long as I don't attempt to activate the L2 cache. No cache-enabling software will work on it. I have tried the xlr8 stuff, the PowerLogix stuff, nothing works. Machine freezes or gives bomb screens with bus errors, finder errors, etc. Cannot enable the L2 cache without a crash. And when it crashes, it usually takes the desktop file with it, giving me gibberish text for icon names, etc.
Have tried very OS from 8.6 up to 9.2.2. All behave the same way. As soon as the xlr8 (v 2.6.1) or powerlogix cache extension loads, the machine freezes or bombs. Clean install after clean install. Brand new hard drive. Diskwarrior'd and PlusOptimized, zapped pram & rebuilt desktop until I'm blue. Tried holding down "apple-option-x-r" etc. as suggested in xlr8 read me, while starting up, no difference. Most of the time it won't even let me get far enough to enter the xlr8 serial. Here's the rest of the facts: -Three brand new sticks of 256mb RAM (recommended for Beige G's w/G4 upgrades by MemoryX) Kingston KVR133X64C2/256, RAM tests fine. -Revision 3 Rom Mobo: Part # 820-0824-B ©1997, got the Rage II DVD chip. Jumper set to PS2 Supply Serial # KD8128AHAOlb A/V board ©1997, 820-0923-A "Wings board" Voltage Regulator Raytheon RCB010 VRM for Power PC Rev 01 O/CA1981004WS Processor zif: Motorola XSC7400HIP400CE B393YN 337-2580 on the processor chip itself: XSC7400 RX400NG 86J87W DCD9938 -Jumpers set at 400mhz, 66mhz bus speed, nothin' extravagant. -Have stripped the mobo down to bare and let it sit & rebuilt it back up twice. Punched the cuda til I'm blue. -Google'd everything I could find about it, and nothing addresses this. Found was an old page at xlr8yourmac that said "oughta work fine...oughta get 500mhz out of it without a prob", which is what everyone else I've talked to about this has said, and I've consulted with several true Mac Guru types. Can anyone help? I'm a long-time Mac users, and I rarely have this sort of trouble with any kind of Mac hardware, and this is driving me crazy.
