The simplest solution would be to go out and buy an ethernet hub or 
switch and forgo the crossover cable. I've always found that to be a hit 
or miss proposition.

A good place to get one would be SWS Electronics ( just south of 
Broadway and Plumer) they sell a Trendnet 10/100 autosensing 8-port 
switch for $35. A good deal, we use several of them here in the College.

If you're thinking of going for DSL or Cable service in the future, 
invest now in a router instead of a switch. SWS sells the TrendNet 
4-port 10/100 router for $50. (this from trend net's site: 
<http://www.trendware.com/products/TW100-S4W1CA.htm> )

You can use it as a switch for the time being to connect your two 
computers, and when you get broadband, you can connect it to the cable 
or DSL modem and share the internet connection that way.

Configuration of the whole thing is by web browser.
