Check your CD drive. Make sure it's the original Apple CD drive that
came with your G3 and not an aftermarket one. You cannot install /
boot from am OSX disk using anything but a stock Apple drive on the
beige.

This is absolutely untrue!

I installed Jag on my Big-Beige-Beast from a TDK VeloCD 24x10x32 CD-RW
drive connected to the built in IDE bus as Master.
Also installed in this Mac is a Kenwood TrueX 52x SCSI CD-R which held the
second disk for the Jag installer.
The machine has 6MB Vram on the built in and an ATI Radeon Mac Edition
card installed.
The Ram is 768MB of PC133 2-2-2 from Trans International.
The second PCI slot has an Acard66 PCI card with a WD 80gig /8MB drive on
channel 1 and a 60gig 7200 rpm Maxtor on channel 2, The 80 gig drive is
partitioned in three equal portions, the Maxtor in two, 7.5gig
(where Jag is installed) and 50gigs.

All of the partitions showed as available to install Jag onto but I chose the
7.5 gig partition because of all the problems that I had read about
installing Jag
on the Beige G3.

The third PCI slot holds a Generic CompUSA combo USB/Firewire card
with connected USB and Firewire devices.

There is an external SCSI hard drive also connected to the machine and
I installed Jag onto it just like this!

No removing stuff, no Apple CD drive and....

Oh yeah one more thing....

It's got an OWC Mercury G4/450 zif installed and overclocked to 500MHz
on an 83Mhz system bus.

Just for kicks I'm gonna see if I can install Jag onto the 50 gig partition right now.
