I've seen several explanations of this around, aside from the obvious one that they want you to buy a new Mac. Apparently (meaning I've read it in articles, but not really authoritatively sourced), Apple licensed the MPEG2 software in iDVD on the basis it was bundled with their burner, so they pay a fee based on the number of burners sold. If they release it, or allow it to be used, for any other burner, the owners of that code could come after them for a fee for every copy of the software distributed. However, the end users didn't sign any such licensing agreement. So Apple has tried to use copyright laws to force compliance, whether that makes sense or not.
