Not just *any* 'ol one, but if you go to Apple's iTunes page you'll see 
a liust of supported mechanisms there. Also <http://www.xlr8yourmac.com> 
has a lot of info on compatible drives.

I have a Cendyne 48-12-48 CDRW in my system (a Lite-On mechanism) that 
works fine. The trouble, sometimes, is identitfying the mechanism. That 
mine is a Lite-on is only visible if I plug it in and see what's in the 
ROM on the drive; the thing has a Cendyne label on it. Mine works fine, 
boots, burns (quite fast), reads (quite fast, and noisily, I might 
add...all the newer high speed CD drives are noiser than heck.)
