Amber,

I'm afraid I can't give you an answer either, but I can assure you that
you're not alone; the same thing has happened to my Wallstreet three times
in the last two weeks. The first time it happened I zapped the PRAM and
reset the power manager and that fixed it; the second time this method was
unsuccessful so I reinstalled Jaguar and that fixed it. The third time,
after trying the first method and lacking the stomach for the second, I
booted into System 9 on a hunch and when I booted back into X the problem
was gone. This was yesterday, so I can't testify to its long-term success.
I've done some web searches on the subject, and I'm pretty sure it's not a
backlight problem for me, but apparently this is a known issue with the
Wallstreet and your situation may be different. Two things I do know in my
situation are:
1. When it happens, it always happens at the same times (once at the login
screen, which is fixable by pressing the brightness button, then again after
waking from sleep, which is not), and
2. It doesn't happen at all in 9.
>From what I've read, though, it's a combination of my hardware and my
software, so YMMV.
I found a forum in which people were discussing the same thing happening to
their Tibooks. I haven't needed to try any of their methods yet (touch
wood), but you may be able to pick up some tips:

Hope this helps somewhat, and please keep us informed,

Mitch.
