>Questions are:
>1. Can a DVD-RAM drive read standard DVDs (as in movie DVDs)?

Yes

>2. Can a DVD-RAM drive write standard CD ROMS (as in music or data) and
>CD-RWs?

No, It can't write cdrs

>3. The only other approach I can think of is to use an external CD-R/RW on a
>firewire port. Is there any other Apple-compatible drive (iDVD, ITunes)

>read DVDs and write CD-R/RWs that is out there?

Option 4
Check the http://www.XLR8yourmac.com site for combo drive compatability. I
picked up a Toshiba 8x8x8x32 DVD/CDRW for $40 that works with the hacked
version of Apples DVD player and burns CDRs with Apples disk burning
software in 9.2.2 with no problems at all. It is in a beige MT. I don't do
anything with music, so I can't tell you about iTunes, but the above site
should.
