This may not apply to the DVD player but I find 10.2.4 defaults to zero volume
quite often for reasons I can't figure.  In the sound control panel there's a
checkbox to "show volume in menu bar" which puts a little speaker icon on the
right side of the bar.  This allows you to reset the system volume without
having to open the control panel.

Does anyone know why my volume keeps going to zero (not mute)?
