I have a 7300/200, and an old IIfx, which although I haven't had them for a while, I have already been very impressed by the stability, ease of use, and quality of Apple computers. I am looking to buy a Blue and White G3 very soon, but due to the plethora of build-to-order options that Apple supplied with these systems, I am a bit confused about what is available.
I want to use the B&W for analogue and digital video capture and editing, as well as DVD and CD writing and playing. I need RCA video-in ports, and S-Video would be nice as well. My questions are: Did Apple supply a DV ready system as an option, and if so, what components do I need to look for? If there is no Apple-built video system, are there any used or new solutions that are inexpensive (under $100) that will take care of this? I would prefer a PCI card, but I understand there are USB and FireWire options also. If I must go with a FireWire option, what is the max resolution that FIreWire can capture? I understand that most USB solutions are limited to 352x288 @ thoousands or millions of colours. Are FireWire options better? Is the DVD decoder add-on for the standard Apple-shipped video card generally available, if not supplied with the system I wind up buying? I know that Apple calls their video card slot on the Yosemite logic board a "PCI 2.1 66MHz" slot, but to me it looks a LOT like a AGP card slot. Are there better video card solutions available for this computer? What do I need to look for n shopping for one? Do any have onboard DVD / MPEG-2 decoding ability? If a DVD drive is installed on a Yosemite that is not Apple-branded (ATAPI would probably be used), can the computer still be booted from CD, especially with the right drivers? If not, is there a solution? I understand that only the revision 2 or later logic boards will reliably support slave drives on the IDE bus without data corruption. Is this true? Can one install any available size IDE drive in one of these systems, running OS 9.2.2 and OS X 10.2.x? What is the best, easiest to use, most inexpensive, most reliable (ie: no crashes, lockups) video editor for OS 9.x and/or OS X? I don't need anything fancy, for example: cutting out commercials of TV shows, trimming beginning and end of a TV show to make it neater, with perhaps a fade in/out between acts (where the commercails were). I am also considering an iMac DV, circa 1999/2000 also. What are the benefits and disadvantages between the Yosemite and an iMac DV? And last... Can I even get a Yosemite (B&W) with a matching monitor for under $300-$400? Or am I dreaming? Sorry for the long post, but this is important to me, and I would like the learned opinions of the Mac community. Thanks! Michael -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
