Another semi-foolproof way to sort out misbehaving desktops is to use ResEdit, and make "DesktopDB" and "Desktop DF" visible, and put them in the trash. You can't delete them as they're flagged as in use. On a restart, the MacOS won't use files in the trash, so it will construct completely new desktop files. Then you can empty the trash and get rid of the old desktop files.
