Is adding a longer IDE cable the answer? Isn't there a limit on the length the IDE cable can be?
I believe it is 6 feet... that was SCSI's limitation and IDE uses more power on the cable so it could easily be longer (you should have seen the server I had with a 6-foot SCSI cable... that box was HUGE!!!)
