I installed a PCI ATA-133 disk drive controller card in my G3 Beige (DT, ROM-A, 192MB RAM, 233MHz, 4GB hdd) a while back and set up a 20GB Western Digital hdd with a less-than-8GB partition for future OS-X install and the balance as Mac OS HFS+ (I believe). The OS-X partition may also have been HFS+. I never installed any version of X.

At some time after creation, in association with no other event that I can recall, the "regular" OS 9 partition failed to boot. I had to revert to the old 4GB hdd to boot, after which I could see the <8GB partition but not the large second one.

I tried Norton Utilities (v. 5?), Disk First Aid, Disk SEtup, etc, to no avail. The partition could not be recovered. Surface tests reported no errors, as I recall.

The time is well past when I should move the drive to another machine or initialize it and start over with the G3. But I fear that whatever happened may recur.

Any thoughts on what might cause a partition to die and how to prevent it from happening again?

Thanks!
Eric
