Do you still have the 9 gig drive connected with the new 18 gig drive? If so you have to change the ID of one of the drives. The location of the pins to jump can be found on the site for the company that made the new drive. Also if the new drive isn't at the end of the SCSI chain the termination setting should be off. Info also at the company site. If termination isn't correct the drive may work occasionally but not reliably. Most SCSI drives I've dealt with came with the termination on. You could try with the new drive plugged into the end of the cable with the electronics removed. If you go with the IDE/ATA drive, the new drive should come with a cable about 14" long. the drive can attach to the same bracket that the SCSI uses.
