Almost done getting the Beige Demon in order. Did all my setup while on the LAN for testing and some file transfers and now I'm trying to get the modem in gear. Then, I disabled Ethernet (unchecked Ethernet to ensure it would look to the modem for Internet access).

I've chosen "Apple 56k v90" for the built-in modem. That sound right? Connects at like 42k, but then again I don't really trust my house to have full 56k transfer over modem.

Now, the question:
Mail correctly automatically makes Internet Connect dial out but doesn't wait for the modem. When choosing to receive mail it immediately throws up "can't get mail on port 110, check if you did something wrong, loser..." but it also starts dialing right away anyway. After the modem connects I can manually get mail. Why won't Mail wait until the modem connects?

It's impatient.

None of the network apps work with a modem like they did under 9; waiting until the network connection was made. I use an IMAP server, and after the initial message, it does connect and get my new mail automatically after a moment or two. Web browsers do the same thing; time out before the modem conects.

I haven't found a way around this (though to be honest, I've not looked very hard), and I suspect it's due to the nature of both the multitasking nature of OS X and networking under Unix; they really don't expect to be *off* the network.

The app isn't *having* to wait for network connect to be made, and the built-in timeouts are too short to allow the connection to be established.

This is the first time I've used a modem w/ Jaguar. I used a modem w/10.1 w/o any problems (on another Mac). I also notice that clicking on the Sharing pane dials out automatically and if you "disconnect" the modem keeps dialing again unless you quit System Preferences. This bug alone (and the more annoying Mail issue above) may force me to turn off automatic dialing. Anybody got a fix?

This I haven't seen. (though I don't remember going into the sharing panel on mine)

You may want to check Directory Access (in the Utilities folder) and uncheck all of the services you don't use. If you haven't got a local network (though I'm assuming you do, otherwise why get into the sharing control panel?) you can turn them all off.

This also appears to remove some maddening slowdowns and SBBOD's in OSX.

If you are sharing with other macs, all you need is AppleTalk and possibly Rendezvous, if they're running OSX.

I'll have to test this on my home Mac and see if I get the same thing.
