I think I had normal behavior with Safari, however. I'll check it again. Hard to believe such impatience is the norm; as I said, 10.1 was fine in that regard.
You may want to check Directory Access (in the Utilities folder) and uncheck all of the services you don't use.
OK, I'll take a look. Also pouring over the latest Macaddict --- feature article on X bugs. Lots of talk about caches, prefs etc. I also seem to recall fresh setups of OS7-8-9 often not waiting or even asking the modem to act until TCP/IP prefs were trashed.
