This is something that really needs to be tested. Do you have some spare DIMMs sitting around? Preferably some you could swap out from a working system. Is this a computer you bought used? Has it ever worked during the time you've owned it? Do you have an 8.6 cd you can try booting from? What happens if you pull the hard drive out of the system entirely?
