Hi Michael, Wish I knew as much about OS X as I do Classic stuff (see my NUMEROUS posts on the install OS X issue ;-) - run Norton Utilities or TechTool Pro, pref. Norton because of its tell-tale reaction to the following: if (as I suspect) Norton Utils fails midway through a Disk Doctor scan, then the hard drive has bad blocks (irrepairable, in my experience) and will need replacing.
