OS X (Panther)

Hi all,its maybe a bit early but I am wondering about panther, I have a 
G4 800 TI,it came with osx1.0 and included in the box was jaguar 
upgrade disk,I have had to erase and reload this machine several  times 
during my learning process and I find I no longer need os9 for anything 
now,my old scanner was the last holdout ,would a retail version of 
panther make for an easier reload ?would my original hardware 
diognostic disk still be usable? thanks for opinions and help in 
decideing for later on,though no hurry, so far all is well except Im 
haveing to use sherlock2 in os9 as sherlock3 in osx wont stay open.its 
a work around but I would like to know of a fix
