I would bet that the 9.1 hang is due to an extension that came with the Sonnet.  
Any Altivec enabler or cache enabler will crash Classic mode.  One of those
enablers is loaded as an early extension, even with extensions off.   Delete
them from your extensions folder and you may be fine.

That is one of the reasons I keep a seperate 9.2 system for Classic.  The other
reason to do that is you don't need most of the 9.2 extensions in classic and
classic boots much faster without them.
