Have you tried replacing the Startup Disk control panel from 8 with the one from 9? Maybe the old OS 8 startup disk control panel might not be able to recognize X. I remember 10.1 having a notice that we were suppose to replace the 9.1 startup disk control panel with the one one the CD.
