Janice - Have you rebuilt your desktop lately? If not try that. That should be done at least once a month.
Dumb question? How do I rebuild the desktop?
Hold down the Command-Option keys while starting up. Hold them down until you are asked 'Do you want to rebuild the desktop on <drive name>' .
Something you should do about once a month or so.
