You don't say which G3 etc as Santa pointed out.   

I'll tell you what happened on my G3 Minitower recently and if it doesn't make
sense to you, it's probably not the cause of your problem.  

I had adjusted the timing jumpers to overclock the machine then set them back in
their original positions for my G4 zif upgrade.  The machine ran real slow.   I
figured out that the jumpers were making bad contact and fixed the problem by
moving them up and down a couple of times with tweezers.

As I said, if you've never messed with the jumpers, it probably isn't your
probelm.
