I have 10.2.6 on a 266 Mhz iMac and it's running well. It's not a speed demon, but it's tolerable. I don't use it as my main machine, so I don't get frustrated with the speed limitations with OS X. It has 256 MB RAM, bumped the VRAM up to 6 MB, and installed a 20 GB HD. Memory and HD storage is the best thing you can do for OS X. This is probably old news for you though.
If you choose between OS 8.x or 9, definitely go with OS 9! Since it's stock, you probably don't need to add more HD storage for OS 9 right away. OS 9 takes up so little hard drive space compared to OS X. Don't spend too much money on OS 9 though since it's an older OS.
Hope this helps. Keith
Hi-
I just picked up a 233 imac with System 8.5. It's totally stock, but I will prob throw some more RAM in. What is the best OS for this machine? 8.5-6 or 9? I'm more concerned with speed. Is there any noticeable difference between these two OS's couched in that criteria?
