Get a beige G3---any speed, doesn't matter, any rev, doesn't matter, tower or desktop, doesn't matter---and a big drive. How big? How many songs you gonna put in it? Don't forget you have to partition the drive to accept OSX...
Install OS 10.2.6 and iTunes 4 and Timbuktu. After you have it working to suit you, get a Mac to VGA monitor adapter to plug into the monitor jack so the video will run, then put the box in a closet somewhere and run its audio outputs to the PA system or phone system or whatever. Control it from any other Mac on the network via Timbuktu. If you don't already have Timbuktu, download a shareware program called "NetTunes" for $20 and use it to control it. Couldn't be simpler, and very reliable. I have two of 'em running in my house and control 'em from my iBook. Works GREAT! Plus, you can listen to the music on it on the other Macs without having to listen to the background music stream. Everyone can have his own favorites going.
Email me off-list if I can help...

I don't know if anyone will have an answer for this, but it's worth a shot.
My company wants to set up an iPod to play background music. They want it to
be able to run 24 hours a day. Can an ipod be set up to do this?
