Howdy All...
Just wondering...I have an 80 GB drive..
What are the pros and cons of partitioning a hard drive?
With the advent of HFS+ the main reason for partitioning large drives became moot (Which was to reduce sector sizes in order to conserve file space). Now you really only need to do it in for specialized needs:
1) In your case, to install OS X, you'll need to partition it in at least two partitions, one less than 8Gb in size, and the other the rest of the drive.
2) Video and Audio recording benefit from having freshly cleaned up drives as workspaces. If you have a partition for this, you can simply erase the partition before starting on a new project.
The cons are that, you have more drives to keep track of where stuff is, and also, they're still a single physical drive. If it goes, they all go south.
