OK, I'll bite.

DVD/RAM media comes in 4 different types.

The DVD-RAM drive reads and writes the following DVD discs in cartridge:

*    Single-sided 2.6 gigabyte (GB) DVD-RAM Type 1 cartridge (disc not
removable) and Type 2 cartridge (disc removable)
*    Double-sided 5.2 GB DVD-RAM Type 1 cartridge (disc not removable)
*    Single-sided 4.7 GB DVD-RAM Type 1 and Type 2 cartridge (Power Mac G4
(Gigabit Ethernet) only)
*    Double-sided 9.4 GB DVD-RAM Type 1 and Type 2 cartridge (Power Mac G4
(Gigabit Ethernet) only)

Certain drives also read the following DVD discs:

*    Single-sided 2.6 GB DVD-RAM
*    DVD-R (3.95 GB), written using the disc-at-once method
*    DVD-ROM (One- or two-layer, one- or two-sided)
The drive reads the following CD discs:

*    CD-ROM (Modes 1 and 2)
*    CD-Audio (CD-DA)
*    CD-R
*    CD-RW
*    CD-ROM XA (Mode 2, Forms 1 and 2
*    CD-I (Mode 2, Forms 1 and 2)
*    CD-I Bridge
*    CD-I Ready
* Photo CD (single and multiple sessions)
* Video CD (White Book standard)
*    CD-Extra (Blue Book standard)

OK, some of the above was 'borrowed' from Apple.

As stated above, the type two disks are removeable. Just like a cd.
However, the face is ultra-sensitive to touch. In other words, do not touch
surface. It is actually a gel that allows formatting and usage.

As previously noted here, there are dvd/rw drives that still provide dvd/ram
capability.

My Panasonic LF-D211A does not require the use of a tray plus I can use dual
sided 4.7 gig (9.4 total). This offers a pretty significant storage
capability, especially since I can treat the media almost exactly like a
hard drive. IE, drag files to trash, create folders, move files, install
applications directly to disk, and more. Re-Writeable is a slight a
misnomer, although true, as most people apply that to media like dvd/rw and
cdrw. DVD/RAM is a very unique media, like a hard drive, only the size of a
cd.

Whether or not DVD/RAM is going out may be true or not, but I sure would
never get rid of mine due of its flexibility for data storage.
