I don't think holding down the single Mac mouse button emulates a right
click. To get this feature you need to hold down the control key first
before you click. The right click (or holding down the control key) does
give you extra options when accessing files or working within an app.
Example : Instead of dragging your files to the trash you simply right click
and get the "Move to Trash" command. If you right click the trash you get
the "Empty Trash" command (this empty trash feature only applies in OS 9.x
and lower -- Jag gives you this command even with the left click). Within
an app you get some features without having to go to the tool bar or menu
bar.

As for the right button dying on you due to usage then I guess you're
dealing with a really cheap mouse. You could say the same thing for the
left button or more so for the single button on a Mac mouse -- you would be
using these buttons more than the right button.
