Len has kindly responded, and I'll take this opportunity to use his reponse
to narrow the field of my search:

Got that, an Apple OEM ATI Rage 128 w/ DVD decoder card

Got that - an Apple OEM 8x DVD drive - I tried the hack on DVDplayer 2.7 w/
OS 9.2.1 - didn't work; just WHAT did Apple write this player for anyhow?
It cites all sorts of things its NOT for, but never clarifies what it was
meant for!
Tried the OS 9.2.1 native version 1.3 of DVD player, but as reported in my
earlier post yields this:
states that "certain Macintosh hardware can't be found to run Apple DVD"
(doesn't say what these hardware components are). The OS, in the System
profiler, recognoizes both DVD drive and ATI card.
Was there another version of Apple DVD that WAS written for the G3s?

Truly a beast of beasts :-)

Clearly one glaring difference is that this machine (the one I'm on) is not
slated for upgrade, so OS X is simply not going to be on it (I do have a B+W
with Jaguar on it that does play DVDs wonderfully through its ATI Mac
Radeon) - so now the key question is narrowed:
>> Can, in any way, a beige G3 (desktop) play a DVD on OS 9.2.1?

My thanks to all for any input; and thanks Len for contributing.
Best regards,
Dana
