I have just installed Office X and did a custom install of the Value Pack. In here there is an option for an Office Remove utility that enables one to remove Office 98, 2001 & X.
I presume this would do the job properly (in which case it must have been written by a 3rd party as I have never known a Micro$oft program to anything properly...)
