Let's see... It generally depends on how your PC reacts to it. Go ahead and plug the iPod in. One of two things will happen. Either the PC will detect the device and realize that it's not formatted FAT32 (never use NTFS, BTW) and it will ask you to format it. Go ahead and format it at this time. The second thing it may do is nothing at all. The machine may not react to it with any dialog boxes. However, the iPod updater may see the iPod. Launch the iPod updater and, if it sees it, run the updater.

In either case, the iPod updater needs to be run. The updater not only formats it to FAT32, but also puts the s/w on the iPod that tells it it is an iPod. Once that is done you can start using Music Match to sync your music to the iPod. That should just about do it...
