I have installed a "Wings" A/V card in a Beige G3. Neither my Desktop nor my MiniTower needed a single software patch, just the normal software install. It helps that I had an original install disk, and wasn't using a generic full-install to begin with, so it is possible I got it all without knowing it involved a patch. I've upgraded both to 9.1 with a bunch of memory and am satisfied. I have played VHS tapes and DVDs on both, using external players.
