I had feared that, although I have been very good to this
Pro Mouse---haven't ever banged it around or dangled it by
its tail.  Interestingly, I was able to locate a webpage
that addresses my Pro Mouse symptoms, including the

This is a fairly detailed description of how to dismantle
and repair the Apple Pro Mouse (which seems to have a bit
of a reputation for USB cable short-circuits).  I don't
know if I'm going to dismantle the thing just yet---think
I'll try picking up a cheap one on eBay first, for testing
purposes.
