and the 9600 (legacy) here (but also contains the specs for beige G3s):

According to specs, the 9600 holds a lot more RAM (768 vs. 384 for G3). Hmm.... I'd say keep the G3 if you weren't planning on upgrading the processor, but it sounds like you'll be upgrading the processor of whichever machine you keep. I would imagine the G3's system bus is marginally faster, but probably not enough to make a huge difference after the processor upgrade.
I'd keep the 9600. You'll get more RAM and more PCI slots in a machine that may be just a tiny bit slower than the G3 with the same processor upgrade in it. At least one PCI slot will be spoken for with your new FW/USB combo card in it... ;)

So I guess the few things I'm wondering is if my upgrading the 9600 with say
a G3 400 processor will show less a boost than the G3 with the same speed?
Namely that 'Lookaside' Bus thing is throwing me. I think I'd like to keep
the 9600 due to the xtra pci slots but is there any great bennies to keeping
the G3 and upgrading it instead?
