with the right cable, you should be able to use any multi-sync monitor as primary (boot) monitor, and any monitor as a second monitor. i'd check the griffin database to see if it's a multisync, if not it probably won't do 640x480 and can't be used as your primary monitor, however it could still be used as a secondary (the machine i'm using has had a "tekxpress" and another fixed frequency monitor as the secondary at various times). the problem is that os 9 and x insist on booting into 640x480 during install and ignore the monitor sense codes entirely (it's actually an open firmware thing, and i'd say it's a design flaw to ignore information all monitors provide according to current standards). even sync on green monitors work well, as a secondary monitor, or primary if they are multisync. the griffin database can be found from <http://www.griffintechnology.com/>, i've no affiliation with them, other than having used thier products and database, and i've a sync on green adapter i designed that i think works better than thiers. note that pre-open firmware machines can use such a monitor as primary with no problems, with the right adapter which is often simple and might be available on the swap list, or easy to make if you can solder.
