I had a similar problem, and it turned out to be the processor.  Some
systems were shipped with defective zifs, and the problem can be fixed by
replacing it.  I replaced my 450mhrz zif with a 400mhrz one, and it's worked
great since then.  Search the B/W G3 forums on Apple's web site for more
info...
