I have Quartz Extreme running on my Beige 266 with a 64M PC Radeon 7000. The PCI Extreme hack works great. I think I read on LEM that QE caused about a 15% hit in performance. Running Xbench before and after installing PCI Extreme showed only a one or two percent decrease in performance.
Given that QE is intended to *increase* performance, by shifting to the grapihics controller some of the things the CPU would do, perhaps you can understand why Apple didn't enable it for PCI systems...
