Now you have my interest, and that re: Quartz Extreme. 1) Can a B+W w/ Jaguar and an ATI Radeon Mac Edition (not the 7000) run Quartz Extreme? 2) Judging from your words, David, I'm presuming Quartz Extreme is NOT automatically part of the OS? 3) How does one get Quartz Extreme onto a machine? 4) And what is PCI Extreme?
Inquiring minds want to know! Many thanks, Dana
Hi Dana,
PCI Extreme is a neat program that modifies I believe is the .plist in OS X to activate Quartz Extreme
on PCI machines. Initially, Apple believes that you can only benefit from Quartz Extreme performance with AGP Macs, which probably rings true since an AGP 2x (133Mhz) slot is faster than the fastest 66Mhz PCI dedicated slot for video on the B&W G3. However, a lot of people have done this mod and the performance benefits seemed to outweigh the bus penalty you suffer when Quartz Extreme is activated on PCI machines.
Quartz Extreme is part of Jaguar and is an attempt to shift graphics rendering responsibilities to the GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) of the video card. Apple says you need a minimum of an ATI Radeon processor or an Nvidia GeForce with 16Mb of VRAM to activate Quartz Extreme. Old Rage cards do not qualify. Therefore, any Radeon cards qualify for Quartz Extreme and that include Mac Editions and some PC based ones that are flashed.
Hope this helps and may Quartz Extreme be with you!
