This is what I remember hearing about.  I've seen the
odd shaped apple mic's in eBay(can't remember what
they are called).  Do you think "it" has the longer
plug? I have both the base model audio in/out card
plus the wings card.  I've found a free download of
"Coaster", and was trying to get my other half set up
so she could read some short stories to record using
the G3.  I imagine her reading and recording one page
at a time to make a file for burning to CD later.

I have no idea how much space this requires in Kb/Mb
either, so we will just have to experiment. I could
live with the mono recording if it takes that just to
get started. She is a librarian and gets these wish
list from the blind for books or magazine articles on
tape or CD. I just purchased a new mono mic thats for 
a Karaoke box....for cheap the other day, but it's
plug is 1/8 x 1/2. I had hoped to use it but am not
sure if it will work now.

Does anyone have a Apple Microphone where they can
measure the length of the plug and let me know it's
length? Perhaps I can rig an adapter yet.
