I had a lot of trouble getting 10.2 loaded on my Rev 1 Beige G3 also.
What finally worked was to take all the RAM out but one stick (believe
it was the original RAM). Some people have to remove USB cards and other
peripherals. I had to put the original CD-ROM back in also, as the CDRW
I installed wouldn't work. Then I put the CDRW back in. I still cannot
boot to an OS X CD, but I've heard there are fixes for that.

FWIW, my Maxtor hard drive came jumpered correctly.
