I agree with Jack Russell completely. There's nothing like being out in the

it's an option.

Everyone talks about how fast digital cameras suck batteries dry but at least with my Olympus D490Z it isn't the case. On a three day railfanning trip where I shot over 200 pictures per day I think I changed the (alkaline) batteries twice. That's 6-700 pictures. I've stuck with alkalines because they do last and because I don't want to deal with keeping NiMHs charged. If my camera could charge the batteries inside I would probably go with rechargables. My chief concern is having the camera sit around for a month, with the batteries self discharging, grabbing the camera and finding I've got dead batteries.

I will put in a plug for the Sony Cybershot P52 or P72. They're selling in Canada for approximately $299 and $349 Cdn right now. They have 3.2 megapixels, excellent lenses, a host of easy to reach features, and one of the biggest things that nobody has talked about yet, the ability to shoot 640x480 digital movies with sound, up to the capacity of the memory stick.

Many digital cameras offer movies without sound. A few offer movies with
sound, but 99.5 per cent of them do a max resolution of 320x240 @15fps. The
Sony cybershot p52 and p72 offer the higher resolution 640x480. So does the
Canon A70.

If you want to see the difference in quality, go to www.steves-digicams.com
and check out the sample page for the A70. Then check the sample movies from
some of the other cameras. You won't believe the difference.

I love being able to take pictures and short video clips with my cybershot.
I have a Fuji 6900 6x zoom at work, but I will take the cybershot anytime
for it's small footprint, loads of features and photo and movie quality. And
the cybershot does hundreds of photos on two NIMH batteries.

The one big criteria for me with any digital device
is the ability to use a standard battery. The ability to shove standard
AA batteries in a digital camera has saved me more than once when stuck
in out of the way locales.

Just food for thought.
