I used to think this way too, and bought my second digital camera with that in
mind. But the Canon s50, my current camera, uses a small propriatary battery
that lasts a long time. I found a source of compatible batteries on the
internet at about 1/3 the price of the Canon batteries (like $13) and they have
larger capacity than the Canon batteries. I bought two and that gives me pretty
good back woods insurance. They are much lighter and less bulky than AAs as
well. They charge quite rapidly too.

Probably, second batteries for some digital cameras will cost a lot, but even
so, it is worth having a backup or two. On the other hand, AAs are handy if
they fit in a camera you really like.

And, Wilton Shaw, who started this thread...if you are still reading and are
still looking for a camera, Staples has a deal this week on a 3 mpx Fuji (A210)
with 3 x optical zoom. It's $199 for the camera, a 128 meg compact flash card
and some odd accesories. I had a friend ask me about cameras this morning for
her two daughters. They found that deal and bought two.

Sounds good to me.
