No ZIP drive in this config? There was a problem a while ago with ZIP
drives, waking from sleep and slow typing (in OS 9), it was resolved by
updating the IOmega drivers.
Turns out this was exactly the problem. I downloaded the latest Iomega driver (Iomegaware 4.02, driver version 6.1) and the problem is solved. Thank you Marc.
