DVDs are usable on pre-G3 machines, too.

I installed a Radeon 7000 and a EIDE DVD player (through an UATA card ... 
required Intech's CD/DVD support software) on a 7300/200.

At 200 MHz, it was barely acceptable and hung occasionally during fast 
forward, etcetera, options.

With a 300 MHz G3 card in the 7300 it was much better and did not hang.

For normal use, I would say a 533 MHz G3 in a Beige would be close to ideal.

But, the earlier machines are functional, too, although not nearly as ideal.
