In my version of Sherlock2 under OS 9.1 there is a way to schedule an index. 
You have to pull up Sherlock and in the toolbar under Find you will see the 
word index, if I open that window it offers me a list of volumes to be indexed 
and in the lower left corner the word Schedule appears. If I click on that it 
offers me a chance to schedule the day and time to schedule an indexing.
