definitely want a G4. What do you recommend?

No G4 laptop made by Apple has ever been upgradeable. A few could be 'upgraded' by logic board swaps, but you'll pay less just buying a newer one to start with.

Moreover, the last upgradeable powerbooks (the Pismo series of G3's ) can only be upgraded to slightly faster than the low-end G4 you're talking about.

With a laptop, basically, the idea is buy as much as you can afford, and deal with it. Depending on your budget, consider not buying one for a bit, or selling off some of those 6 windows ones you have and buying a new G4 iBook. The low end is an 800 mhz G4 for $1100.

You can upgrade the memory (which makes a huge difference in OS X), the hard drive, and the optical drive.
