Thanks to all who answered my questions about replacing my DVD-ROM with a
Superdrive. I look forward to getting it in. I found the following quote on
a website and it really picqued my curiosity..... I came across my B&W
G3/450 secondhand so I don't know if the firmware was installed. Is there a
way to check it? I'm currently running OS9.2..... would the OS 9.2 Updater
change the firmware? Would it be more productive to look into a ZIF
processor upgrade?
-snip-
The special deal with an original Blue & White G-3 [of the last year or so
they were in production] was the fact you could update the processor with
one for the new G-4... The first G4 PowerMac was a modified Blue & White.

You could do this UNTIL you ran their last Firmware Updates. This enacted a
change in the ROM that is rather permanent. Keep in mind that ROM-in-RAM
architecture started in 1998; so the firmware change Apple let people have
to "cure" problems also made it so you cannot update just the CPU directly
to G-4. [Now you can buy aftermarket G3 and G4 ZIF processors for easy
upgrades; from $150 and up.]

This was bad news for buyers at the time, and most of that information isn't
available any more; been pulled from Apple's discussion forums and other
sites. Many buyers were unaware of even the ability to do this until it was
permanently lost to those who had a direct Apple avenue of G4 upgrade.
