IDE drives (not SCSI) as they came with B&W G3 have one or two devices
per cable. To make the two devices (not just HD, also CDROM) unique you
have to "jumper them" to be either master or slave. To "jumper them"
look at the backside of the dive where power and the IDE cable are
connected. You'll find another area typically with two rows of metal
pins, 4 wide. If you are lucky you'll find some markings right there. If
not look on the label of the drive for a little schematic.

If only one harddrive is attached you'll jumper it, depending on the
drive, either not at all or as master, i.e. you put a little plastic
connector on one of the vertical pin pairs. Which pins is depending on
the drive type (read the label). For two drives one has to be master and
one slave. For slave typically you put that little plastic (metal
contacts inside) on the second connector (looking at the connector side
of the drive, counting from left to right, label on top, circuit board
at bottom; master is typically the leftmost).

Sequence and jumpering can vary seriously from drive to drive like on a
paritcular Samsung drive where master is indeed leftmost jumper set,
Slave is *no* jumper and jumper on slave (second pin) is slave with
limited drive capacity (32GB instead of 80GB). You can experiment as
setting jumpers usually only switches modes but won't harm the drive.

Hope this helps,

K.-H.
