I've been on the business end of the slave drive issue. It did not prevent me from booting to a CD. These two actions are unrelated. I believe you do have the drive corruption problem. I also believe you have some other hardware failure that is preventing the Mac from booting to the CD.
Try zapping the pram and reset open firmware then try the OS CD again. You should be able to put a known good drive as master on the internal bus and have the Mac boot. If any Mac freezes during an installation while booted to a CD (or any test running from a booted CD) it means there is a hardware failure. When Apple makes the OS CDs they ensure that they work in the computers they are designed to work in with no problems, so if a freeze happens while running from a CD it is a serious red flag.
