What OS is your friend running? Is he connecting to native firewire ports or through an add-on PCI card. Does the drive perform the same way on other computers?
Have your friend check for the latest firmware for that firewire bridge. I've used LaCie's firmware successfully on other brand's to improve it's performance and reliability.
